Once upon a time, in the vast galaxy of education, there was a problem.

Many space cadets were struggling to complete their missions. Some learned best through visuals, others through listening or hands-on exploration. Some needed more support, while others were ready for greater challenges. Yet many learning systems expected every cadet to travel the same path at the same pace.

The wise researchers of the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) began to wonder if the problem wasn’t the cadets at all. What if the real challenge was the way the missions were designed?

Their search led to a powerful framework called Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a new approach that helps educators create flexible, accessible learning experiences that support the needs of all learners.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) was developed by CAST, an educational research organization that sought to better understand why some learners thrive while others struggle. Their work challenged a common assumption in education: when students have difficulty learning, the problem is often assumed to lie within the learner.

Inspired by the concept of universal design in architecture, CAST proposed a different approach. Instead of retrofitting accommodations after barriers are discovered, what if learning environments were designed from the beginning to be flexible, accessible, and responsive to learner variability?

This shift—from fixing learners to improving design—became the foundation of UDL. Rather than asking students to adapt to a single path, UDL encourages educators to provide multiple pathways to engagement, understanding, and success.

As you explore the origins of UDL, consider this question: When students struggle, do we tend to focus on changing the learner, the environment, or both?
