Find Your Inner Drive

This is a 1 Stage Quest. Upon completion you will receive:

  • 5 Experience Points (XP)

Greetings, explorers! I am Guy, your assist-bot on this mission. I have a new challenge for you today. This mission is all about self-determination theory and how it can be applied to educating humans.

In this quest, you will learn about what drives human motivation throughout the universe and how this can lead to more effective and engaging learning experiences for all space cadets.

So, are you ready to embark on this intergalactic journey of self-determination? If so, then suit up and let’s blast off! The adventure ahead is sure to be filled with exciting challenges and opportunities for growth.

Self-Determination Theory

Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is a psychological theory that describes how human motivation works. According to this theory, people have three primary psychological needs:

  1. Autonomy: the need to feel in control of one’s own life
  2. Competence: the need to feel effective at tasks and activities
  3. Relatedness: the need to feel connected to others

When these needs are fulfilled, people are more likely to be intrinsically motivated, which means they engage in activities or pursue goals because they find them inherently satisfying or enjoyable. In turn, this intrinsic motivation can lead to greater happiness, well-being, and personal growth.

In contrast, extrinsic motivation refers to motivation that is driven by external factors, such as rewards, punishments, or social pressure. While extrinsic motivation can be effective in certain situations, it can also undermine intrinsic motivation and lead to decreased engagement and well-being.

By creating learning experiences that are meaningful, relevant, and supportive, educators can help students tap into their own internal motivations and drive, and support their success and well-being.

We are now going to see how Self-Determination Theory has informed Universal Design for Learning. Spend 2 minutes looking at the UDL Chart and see how places the principles of autonomy, competence, and relatedness can be found on the chart.

  • What are ways that Self-Determination Theory has informed UDL? (Check all that apply.)

  • Optimize Choice and Autonomy
  • Increase Mastery-Oriented Feedback
  • Foster Collaboration and Community
